Chambers dominates Weddington to advance to 4A West final

– Chambers’ hopes of defending his back-to-back State Championships are still alive. The Cougars picked up a road victory over Weddington in the fourth round of the state playoffs on Friday night, 45-14.

Friday’s game was eagerly awaited. Chambers is the reigning two-time 4AA State Champion, and Weddington is just two seasons away from winning back-to-back 3AA titles. But Friday’s fourth round game wasn’t particularly close.

Daylan Smothers scored the game’s first touchdown on a 1-yard run in the first quarter. Chambers led 7-0 after a quarter of play.

The Cougars extended their lead in the second quarter with two more touchdowns. Camren Kennedy broke a 21-yard rush for a score, and Ashton Camp connected with Kevin Concepcion for a 73-yard touchdown to give Chambers a 21-7 lead at halftime.

Weddington’s only first-half touchdown came when Kyle Parsons broke a 73-yard run to score, reducing the Cougars’ lead to 14-7.

The second half was all for Chambers though. Camp threw his second touchdown pass of the game early in the third quarter when he joined Armon Wright for 75 yards, taking the Cougars’ lead to 28-7. The defense also scored points when James Pearce intercepted a pass from Weddington and returned it for 43 yards for a touchdown.

Smothers added a final touchdown in the third quarter to give Chambers a 42-7 advantage going into the fourth.

Chambers added a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and Weddington had a final touchdown in the dying minutes as Grady Brosterhous joined Landyn Backey for a 35-yard touchdown.

Chambers will face the winner of Hough and East Forsyth in the 4A West Regional Championship next week with a trip to the 4A State Championship game in play.
