Chambers reiterates SLC Student-Athlete of the Year award

FRISCO, Texas – Defensive lineman McNeese Isaiah Chambers is repeating himself as a Southland Conference football student-athlete, the league announced Tuesday in conjunction with the all-academic team.

A two-time All-Academic Award recipient, Chambers boasts of a perfect 4.00 GPA as a graduate student majoring in criminal justice. Named the USA’s first team team by Stats Perform, FCS ADA and AP, he was also named the league’s defensive player of the year after leading the league with 15.5 TFL and 10.5 sacks.

He is the first multi-year winner of the School History award and only the third overall selection (Chris Livings 2019).

Chambers is one of four winners with a perfect GPA of 4.00, along with quarterback McNeese Cody Orgeron (4.00, health promotion), UIW offensive lineman Reid Francis and southeast defensive back Matt Wright. Eight other people had GPAs of 3.50 or greater, and the team’s average GPA is 3.47.

McNeese offensive lineman Calvin barkat (3.50, pre-chiropractic medicine) and linebacker Kordell williams (3.00, Criminal Justice) completed all four of the Cowboys’ caps on the team and gave the program an all-time 71.

Eight student-athletes were automatically selected as the first-team winners of all conferences that qualified from all academics, including Chambers. Wright, along with his Southeast teammate Mateo Rengifo and Nicholls defensive lineman Zack Bernard, secured the automatic qualification as CoSIDA Academic All-District nods. HBU linebacker Brennan Young got an automatic nod as an FCS ADA Academic All-Star.

The team was elected by the head coach, director of sports information and a member of the academic / compliance staff from each school. The student-athletes of the year are elected by an awards committee made up of an administrator from each member school. It is forbidden to vote for your own athletes.

To be eligible for the All-Academic distinction, an athlete must hold a minimum GPA of 3.00 in the semester leading up to the sports championship, have completed at least one full academic year in school prior to the current season, and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competitions during the last completed season.
