A day of functioning as a normal democracy. That’s all we ask.

Happy April Fool’s Day, although for our politicians, every waking moment is an opportunity to act like a clown.

The latest example concerns the former mayor of Ekurhuleni and ANC member, Mzwandile Masina, expelled from the council chamber yesterday.

He has since said he would bring charges against Ekurhuleni Chairman Raymond Dlamini and Mayor Tania Campbell, both DA members.

TimesLIVE Reports:

“I was beaten up and I am still ashamed that as an elected member of a party, I could be abused in this way. There was no fight. We just disagreed on the issues. They chose to use an iron first and humiliate us,” Masina said…

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika several hours later, Masina said he was kicked out of council for asking valid questions of the mayor after he delivered the state of the city’s address…

He said the DA-led council was incompetent when it came to dealing with substantive issues, adding that they “used violence and I became a target”.

In response, spokesman Dlamini said Masina was removed from office after continuously disrupting proceedings and then ignoring requests to leave the chambers.

Because it’s not about governance, it’s about creating a stage and then using it to further entrench party battle lines.

Here is Masina being released:

Given the volume of phone shoots, there are several angles:

A solid head of steam gathered here as they accelerated towards the exit, with members of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) and private security officials working together:

There are also moans outside the bedrooms in this second video.

To really stick the knife in, Dlamini said the ANC was “bitter and hadn’t adapted to being the opposition”.

They better get used to it. More than two decades of criminal mismanagement are finally catching up with them at the polls.
